I honestly can’t think of a better Hip Hop song on the radio right now. Every other song out there feels stale by comparison. Help support Bigg Dee and buy “Ordinary” on iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ordinary-single/id574697568 . His new album Fashionably Late is out next month. I’m hoping to have him and the Chef Boyz on Dot Rat radio before they take off on tour.
So I grew up across the street from a very proud family with roots in Nova Scotia. Not only are they proud of their roots but they are very proud Americans. Given their background in military service and service to our city I consider them to be some of the biggest Patriots in Dorchester. All of this seemed to trace back to the patriarch of the family who taught every one of his many sons how to play the pipes and instilled a fierce love of country .
So with our proximity, pipe practice became a daily occurrence in my house. I have to admit it added a lot of charm to our neighborhood. I used to hang out with one of the boys during my younger years and he let me take a shot at the practice pipe one day….complete failure I might add….not an easy instrument to play. My aunts would often stop by to hang out on the back porch with cups of coffee and listen for hours at a time. We learned all about Scottish culture from the Highland games to haggis from this family. They all seem to have this massive appreciation for Jazz, Hip Hop, Metal, Punk and even Classical music.
So I’m watching the tree lighting at the Common the other night and the they start going through the story of how Nova Scotia sends us a Christmas tree every year to say thanks for our help after the Halifax Explosion. I found it incredible that close to 100 years later they still try to say thanks. All of a sudden the Squid Percussion Group from Nova Scotia takes the stage and just blows my mind. These guys fuse their traditions with some urban American flavor….
As you can imagine, these guys made me feel like I was sitting at home at Ma’s house again. Tip of the cap to the MacMasters, you all are the essence of our neighborhood and some of Dorchester’s finest!
Also a big salute to the good folks of Nova Scotia…you are as loyal as they come!
What has 2 thumbs and is going to the Boston College vs Notre Dame football game tonight? Wait for it….this guy! Your old pal Dot Rat will be sitting behind Notre Dame’s bench tonight making the entire team question whether pursuing football was a smart move. There will be no Rudy chants in the stands and the Gipper died a long time ago. I’m going with an Irish fan…so it should be pretty interesting once I polish off my flask.
That’s right Dot Rats…the Dropkick Murphys are filming a video in Dorchester this weekend. I just wanted to say thanks to them for picking Dot as their backdrop.
Also…a big shout out to Mark from Dead Friends for the heads up.
Now how am I supposed to take DreamRyde seriously? Purple? Really? Everyone knows the only guy that can pull that sh*t off is Prince. You got the lead singer in purple panty hose pulled up to her ribcage just waiving purple knuckle all over the room. Then you got this rapper dude rocking a purple dragon shirt dry humping the mic stand trying to be all aggressive and sh*t with his dream hands. Then for extra effect he throws in the occasional 2 handed dream crotch maneuver.
For a second I’m like…”are those people dancing?”. Yup, the guy and gal up front where just feeling the knuckle/crotch magic.
Now this is the type of band I would expect to see at Cathay Pacific while chasing a scorpion bowl high on a Tuesday night. I think if they just tighten up that stage presence and lose the purple gear they would be alright….there is skill there. Maybe the rapper just can’t let go of his past…
Are you in the mood for some an ear punishing good time? Maybe a few bruises via the mosh pit? Why not spend the evening with fellow Dot Rat Mark Doherty of the Dead Friends? Ever wondered how it would feel to give that boss you can’t stand an open hand slap? That’s what the Dead Friends deliver. A pure hardcore/punk show that helps you unleash your inner beast. Judging by Mark’s latest Facebook post…he’s ready to deliver.
I’m pissed off, miserable,& angry. You want to see good show? I’m playing @ Radio tonight,in Somerville…..I’ll make u feel like a million bucks by the time I’m done,& I will kill it ta boot.
That’s right “Wistah” ….you have been warned. My favorite Boston linguists Bigg Dee and the #chefboyz are bringing a fresh brand of Boston hip hop into your neck of the woods this Friday @ The Venue. Bring your cameras….because someday you will want to show your friends you saw them live before they started packing arenas. These boys are legit and come equipped with masterly crafted beats that dig deep into your soul. They keep it fun, and they deliver with a lively flow that’s honest and not overstated.
You may wanna do it like a Dot Rat and make it a weekend bender, in which case you can head this way and hit their next show on Saturday @ Fourthwall Project around the corner from Fenway.
